T-cell therapy could be a powerful cancer fighter in the future.

Researchers have been working hard to figure out how to use the body’s own t-cells to fight and kill cancer. This treatment was given to participants in a clinical trial at The University of Pennsylvania who were suffering from leukaemia. One participant in particular, a man who had been diagnosed with leukaemia, took part in the trial and said it changed his life. His disease had progressed to the point where chemotherapy was no longer effective. He was in complete remission a few weeks after this treatment, with no trace of cancer. It’s been a year since he was diagnosed with cancer, and he’s still cancer-free. In addition to the two patients who took part in the study, there were two more patients. One participant had a complete remission of leukaemia, while the third had a partial remission. These findings are extremely encouraging, and more gene therapy trials are being planned.

The Procedure: During this trial, billions of a person’s T-cells were removed. T-cells are a type of white blood cell that fights and destroys viruses and tumours in the human body. These t-cells are genetically reprogrammed with new genes after they are removed. These new genes instruct t-cells to search out and destroy cancer cells in the human body. The patient is then reinjected with them.

The doctors involved in the trial are not yet claiming that this is a cure. They say that the procedure is still in its early stages and that only a few patients have received it. The New England Journal of Medicine and Science Translational Medicine have also published articles about this trial. Many scientists are ecstatic about it and consider it a major breakthrough in the area of cancer gene therapy.

The purpose of this technique was to use a person’s own immune system to destroy cancer cells. Researchers are now attempting to decide whether this gene therapy can be used to treat other forms of cancer.
