An overview of Yoga is given below to assist you in deciding on your direction of Yogic study. There is no right or wrong way to learn Yoga, but you should be cautious when selecting a Yoga instructor, a Yoga book, or a Yoga class.
First and foremost, you should be aware that there are many Yoga forms. There are nine main types of Yoga; there are several other styles and sub-styles. Bhakti, Hatha, Jnana, Karma, Kundalini, Mantra, Raja, Tantra, and Yantra Yoga are the nine main types of Yoga. Each style emphasises the connection between the body, mind, and spirit.
Yoga literally means “union” or “equality,” and it is possible to attain tranquilly by uniting the body, mind, and spirit in harmony. One of the key goals of Yoga is to achieve peace through better health as a result of a holistic approach to life.
Yoga is said to have originated in India. While there are numerous published works on Yoga, its origins can be traced back thousands of years. Yoga is the “mother” of most health-maintenance schemes around the world. Pilates and Asian martial arts, all of which have their roots in the Shaolin temple, can be traced back to Yoga.
Bhakti, Jnana, Karma, and Raja Yoga are said to be the “higher forms of Yoga.” – of these four types is a complicated topic in and of itself, and I won’t be able to do them justice by summarising them.
Outside of India, Hatha Yoga sub-styles are the most popular. The majority of new Yoga practitioners will begin with a Hatha Yoga sub-style. Hatha Yoga and its many sub-styles focus mainly on physical health, which would almost certainly lead to better mental health. Outside of India, most Hatha Yoga classes do not address spiritual wellbeing.
Fundamentalists, on the other hand, see Hatha Yoga as a “export of Hinduism.” While this may be valid in some cases, most Hatha Yoga teachers are happy to teach better physical and mental health.
As a result, be mindful that when choosing a book or a local Yoga instructor, the Yoga teacher or Guru is a guide – but you have the right to know which direction you are being led in. Along the way, the Yoga instructor learns to expand his or her mind and make independent decisions.
Yoga does not pose a challenge to faith. It is not Yoga if a Yoga teacher teaches intolerance of any kind. Sectarianism is not the same as unity. We must learn to value diversity, and bigotry can never be tolerated. Crime and wars are often caused by prejudice and intolerance.
